The 4th Regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers was authorized for state service by the South Carolina General Assembly on December 17, 1860, and entered Confederate service on June 7, 1861. The 4th Regiment of the South Carolina Infantry was disbanded in April of 1862, much reduced by sickness. Confederate soldier. J.W. Burdine was from Choctaw County, Mississippi, but later lived in Anderson District, South Carolina, where he enlisted in the 4th South Carolina Infantry Regiment.
